Sensuijima Island, Tomocho-Ushiroji, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Exploring the strata of five-colored rock left by volcanic activity approximately 90 million years ago. Colors separated through repeated eruption and subsidence of magma, differentiated by the oxidation and metamorphism of iron. Each individual layer is the sedimentation of unfathomable time itself. The primordial crust, laid bare and exposed to the sea wind, still appeared to carry heat within it. In March 2021, as though drawn by something, I crossed over to this island. The silence of a sterile room. A suit draped on the hollow shell of careless words. Mud of the worksite. Lights of the night city. And two who grew day by day like living mirrors. The years that passed felt like an instant, yet it felt as though I had lived a very long time. A foolish adult — half-thug, half-kid — was still rebelling like a madman. And lamenting his own shallowness more than anyone. Driven by the frustration of possessing no means to convey anything, he searches frantically for a mode of expression. Regardless of will, time alone continues to stack its cross-sections. Upon this rock face, formed through repeated eruption and rest, I overlay my own time. Days that should have been unwanted had, before I knew it, been moving my thoughts and hands. Every experience I never chose now supports those hands. From cross-sections folded upon themselves in countless layers, a single pine reaches toward the sky. Accumulated time does not disappear. Eventually, it surfaces.
